What to expect
As we're sure you already know there are many different styles of churches. When you come to Somerville Baptist Church you can expect to feel welcomed and important. Many people who visit our church comment that our church family is friendly and warm. We do our best to make every guest comfortable and feel that they are among friends. While many of our people dress up for services (shirt and tie for men, or dresses for ladies) you can come as you are, we are just glad to have you as our guest.
Our church family loves to sing the hymns and gospel songs that reflect our heritage. Additionally, we also enjoy singing newer worship choruses and songs that help encourage our walk with God. You will also hear special music by our choir, ensembles and soloists; they are sure to bless and encourage you. We are led in worship by our music pastor and choir.
The centerpiece of every service is the preaching of the Word of God. Pastor Lewis preaches with passion and believes that Bible preaching should never be boring. Each week we hear messages that are inspiring and relevant to our daily walk with God.
At most services we take an offering. This is an act of worship for our church family. We give because we love God and want to show our appreciation for all He has done for us. We never expect our guests to contribute in the offering unless they feel led of the Lord to do so. So when the plate is passed, please don't feel that you are obligated to give.
At the end of every service there is a time when people can come to the front and accept Jesus as Savior, get things right with God, present themselves for baptism, or just pray. We have well-qualified personal workers who can pray with you about any spiritual problem or need you may have.
Lastly, we have a well-equipped nursery and loving staff. You can feel comfortable leaving your infant or child in the nursery. If at any time you are needed you will have a personal nursery pager that will vibrate and leave a message with pertinent information about your child. When you arrive just ask one of our greeters to direct to the nursery.
Somerville Baptist Church was established in 1962. We are a conservative independent Baptist church which has chosen not to be affiliated with any association or fellowship.
At Somerville Baptist Church we believe that our mission is three-fold:
Magnify Christ through worship and the Word.
Move believers toward Christ-like maturity and ministry.
Make Christ known to our neighbors and nations.
Our Core Beliefs
At Somerville Baptist Church we have several core beliefs that guide our body-life.
We believe in one God, eternally existing in three Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
We believe that Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God and that He is wholly God and wholly man, yet without a sin nature.
We believe the words of Scripture (Old and New Testaments) are inspired by God and are without error. They are the final authority for our faith and practice.
We believe that salvation is the free gift of God and is offered to all who will receive Jesus Christ as personal Savior.
We believe that all believers are eternally secure, being kept by the power of God though faith unto salvation.
We believe in the literal, imminent return of Jesus Christ.
We believe in a literal place called heaven where all true believers will spend eternity.
We also believe in a literal place called hell where those who reject Christ will spend eternity.
